Research intern

For undergraduate / visiting research interns.

Hours

  • Summer: full-time.
  • Regular semester: at least 15 hours/week.
  • Time off is OK; let your mentor and PI know in advance.

Grad student mentor

Your grad student mentor is the first point of contact.

  • Meet as often as you need; don't be shy.
  • Typical cadence: 2–3× per week in summer, 1× per week during the semester.

PI meetings

  • Cadence depends on the project. Ask your grad mentor.
  • DM Mengye on Slack if something comes up.

Doing research

  • Learn from more experienced students. Ask for feedback; your mentor is there to help.
  • Ask for explanations when you don't understand.
  • Read papers; ask your mentor for recommendations and study the basics of your project topic.
  • Gradually take on more ownership of the project. It takes work; be patient.

HPC wait too long?

  • Debug your code locally first (srun or the bizon workstation).
  • Optimize for GPU utilization.
  • Ask your mentor to run jobs for you if needed.
